Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is long standing pain that persists beyond the usual recovery period and usually lasts more than 3 months. The intensity of your pain may vary from a dull nagging discomfort to a throbbing or burning sensation. It can affect people to the point where they can't work, eat properly, take part in physical activity, or enjoy life.

Causes of Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain may be caused by inflammation or dysfunctional nerves. Normally, pain begins after an injury or due to a health condition. Leading causes include:

- Past injuries or surgeries

- Back problems

- Migraines and other headaches

- Nerve damage

- Infections

- Fibromyalgia, a condition in which people feel muscle pain throughout their bodies

Chronic Pain can be persistent or it can come and go when the source is agitated or disturbed. The pain isn’t always severe. It can often be mild enough to deal with on a daily basis. However, when ignored, chronic pain can develop into more serious conditions and require costly, invasive surgical procedures. The primary symptom is persistent pain that lasts weeks to years. This pain can feel like:

- A dull ache

- Throbbing

- Burning

- Shooting

- Squeezing

- Stinging

- Soreness

- Stiffness

Living with Chronic Pain

We know how detrimental even the mildest of pain can be. It can affect every aspect of our lives, making simple tasks like grocery shopping or cleaning the house taxing and difficult. It can interrupt our sleep, take a toll on our mental health and in extreme cases, lead to depression.

Lifestyle Factors, such as a lack of physical activity, poor diet, inadequate sleep habits and tobacco use, have been found to increase inflammation in the body, contributing to chronic pain and discomfort.

Chronic Pain Treatment

Addressing these lifestyle factors can be a very effective way to relieve pain and discomfort. In most cases, chronic pain can be treated without surgical procedures and pain relief can be achieved without the use of pain medications.
